In August 2016 Hultafors presented two outdoor knives, the Expedition and Mountain, to big acclaim within the bushcraft and outdoor community. Hultafors is pleased to announced that the Expedition Knife has been awarded the prestigious Red Dot Award for product design.
The Red Dot Design Award is an internationally recognized quality seal awarded by the Design
Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany. The Red Dot Product Design competition has existed since 1954 and is one of the largest design competitions in the world.
“We are delighted that our new outdoor knives have been so well received by the users. Receiving the Red Dot award for the product design is further proof that we are onto something interesting,” says Nikita Golovlev, Head of Design at Hultafors Group.
Listening to Experienced Users
It was after learning that bushcraft and outdoor enthusiasts were bringing Hultafors Craftsman’s knives into the wilderness that Nikita and his development team decided to make knives dedicated to outdoor activities. “We started a close dialogue with experienced users, listened to their needs and requests and set about,” says Nikita Golovlev.
Coated Blades to Prevent Against Rust
Tailor made for the outdoors the Expedition Knife comes with 3 mm thick Japanese knife steel with a scandi grind making it easy to re-sharpen. The blade has a black EPD-coating to protect against rust and the spine is ground for use with a fire starter. “Outdoor fans will be interested to know that each knife has an 82 mm long tang which makes the knives suitable for batoning,” says Nikita Golovlev.
Hultafors Expedition Knife
A dependable Swedish-designed survival knife made to dispatch any tough task faced along the journey. A 4-inch Japanese carbon steel blade has been hardened to 58–60 HRC and sharpened in several steps with attention paid to the grinding, honing, and stropping. Featuring a Scandinavian flat grind for superior sharpness, versatility, and easy maintenance. The 0.12-inch thick blade stands up to bending and striking for everyday use, without being unwieldy. A steep front curve on the blade tip provides additional strength for puncturing, and also makes it easy to perform push and pull cuts for carving. The spine of the blade can be used with the Hultafors Fire Starter.
