POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Underwriter position is responsible for managing the underwriting and servicing of accounts with emphasis on profitability. This includes the underwriting of new business opportunities and management of existing accounts. This position reports to the Underwriting Supervisor or Manager and supports the training and development of the underwriting team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Underwrites, prices, manages, and grows a profitable (Combined Ratio less than 90%) book of business based upon eligibility through analysis of loss history, exposures, hazard group, class codes, and reinsurance acceptability.
- Collaborates with the team to maintain a renewal retention rate consistent with the goals established for the program.
- Reviews due diligence reports, loss control surveys, loss runs, financial reports, timeliness of premium payments, and takes appropriate action when necessary.
- Collaborates with specialists such as premium auditors, claims adjusters, and loss control specialists for risk assessments.
- Delivering of proposals and quotes within stipulated time frames, reaction time to compliance issues, and requests from internal departments such as claims, loss control, SIU, operations, and IT, as well as external requests from agents, brokers, and policyholders.
- Underwrites referrals that exceed underwriter/or supervisor letter of authority.
- Assist in the development and training of underwriting assistants, associate underwriters, and underwriters assigned to the team. May take on additional underwriting responsibilities or authority as directed by the Underwriting Supervisor or Manager.
- May be requested to serve as team lead for the assigned underwriting team in the absence of the Underwriting Supervisor or Manager.
- Presents accounts to management for underwriting approval accompanied by the appropriate underwriting data and recommendations.
- Communicates fundamentals of the designed insurance program to agents and accounts.
- Maintains current knowledge of governing rules and regulations, market conditions, and corporate underwriting utilizing available tools, such as Silver Plume and the NCCI Website or WCIRB Website.
- Collaborates with the senior management on presentations, proposals, and on-site visits. Communicates on a regular basis with agents and brokers
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
- Eligible for remote or hybrid work arrangement.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
•College degree or equivalent experience
•Minimum of 3-5 years industry experience with a focus on large account underwriting
•Industry designations, such as CPCU or Arm are preferred
•Strong command of workers' compensation coverage, laws, products and practices.
•The ability to work with minimum supervision
•Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
•Strong communication, presentation, and team building skills.
•Position demands extensive, high-level analysis in the underwriting of individual accounts.
•Ability to interpret financial reports and make assessments of financial strength and ability to pay premiums.
•Must be able to create business opportunities with brokers and clients by understanding their problems and needs and offering viable solutions that are consistent with company objectives.
•Must be able to clearly articulate action plans and solutions to management, agents, and clients.
•Must be capable of establishing workflows and service plans. The position requires strong time management and delegation skills.
•Strong sense of accountability. Willing to make recommendations and take full accountability for outcomes.
